Akyempim Rural Bank and Gomoaman Community Bank to merge

The shareholders of distress Akyempim Rural Bank have voted overwhelmingly to merge with Gomoaman Community Rural Bank.

The move is as a result of the banking getting into bankruptcy and their inability to meet a new capital requirement set by the regulating of the banking and financial industry, the Bank of Ghana.
The central bank has given all rural and community-based banks to increase their minimum capital requirement to GHC 1million by the end of the new coming 2017.
Speaking at the bank’s 30th Annual General Meeting (AGM) for shareholders, the interim board chairman Mr Alex Coffie appealed to the shareholders to avoid the situation where the banks will be closed down entirely as the regulator have given them by time resolve problems facing the bank or have their license withdrawn.
“Please let us accept the resolution of the board to join Gomoaman Community Bank with its headquarters at Apam to avoid facing consequences of withdrawing operational license by the Bank of Ghana (BOG).”
“This is a hard decision that was taken by the Board of Directors to merge with our sister bank. And let me add that this has become necessary following an emergency meeting convened by ARB APEX Bank with distressed banks in the Central region early this year,” he added.
Mr Coffie said the move he believes would attract investors also be able to meet the new capital requirement set out by the Bank of Ghana (BOG) by the end of 2017. The Board Chairman stated that one million Ghana Cedis Share capital required by BOG for every Rural and Community Banks cannot by met due to the current situation of the Bank.
In August 2015 the then board members of Akyempim Rural Bank resigned at a go, on the directives of ARB Apex Bank the mandated regulator of the rural and community base banks in the country due to poor performance and negligence as directors of the Bank.
Mr Coffie lamented that Akyempim Rural Bank as at the time that they were having the AGM could not boost of 50,000 Ghana Cedis share capital and it would be extremely difficult for shareholders to mobilise one million Ghana Cedis by the end of the period given by Bank of Ghana and therefore the merger was a better option.
He told the AGM that, the board was waiting for the completion of the merger processes initiated for the three banks Gomoa Rural Bank at Apam, Gomoa Ajumako Rural Bank at Gomoa Afransi and Eastern Gomoa Assin Rural Bank at Gomoa Dominase due to the liquidity crisis, then theirs could also be commenced.
Mr Coffie said there was an urgent need for the fresh injection of funds to resuscitate the bank so that depositors whose monies are locked up in the bank could be paid gradually to build confidence.

VIDEO: How Social Media Made Naddy Obeng An AIDS-Distributing Sex Maniac

Social media with all its positives has a lot of cons. When a story breaks on social media, verified or not, it spreads like wild fire at the speed of light.

Social media is therefore often used as an instrument of propaganda and a tool for wracking people’s character and personality, justified or not.
The latest person to fall victim to the crashing steel jaw of social media as we know it is young Naddy Obeng.
A couple of weeks ago, she became a social media sensation when news broke that she is a HIV positive patient going on rampage to infect any man who makes advances towards her.
It was alleged that Naddy in a WhatsApp chat with one of her friends, said that she had infected eight men already and would not die alone as she embarks on a nationwide tour of spreading the disease to randy men because one of them infected her same way.
A screen shot of the alleged Whatsapp chat was leaked on social media by the friend with the handle @emmanwandud.
Weeks after the leak, Naddy finally comes out to clear the air.

Fintech: Senegal Has Launched The eCFA, A Blockchain-Enabled Digital Currency

Senegal will soon begin using a digital currency, ushering in the use of blockchain technology by the central bank. It’s another opportunity for financial technology (fintech) to help emerging markets leapfrog traditional banking systems and bring financial inclusion to more people.

If the Senegal roll-out is successful, the currency will be used in most of Francophone West Africa Cote d’Ivoire, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Togo and Lusophone Guinea Bissau. Known as the eCFA, it is designed to operate alongside the CFA, the West African Franc.

The eCFA will be issued by the regional bank Banque Régionale de Marché and will be used by countries in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (link in French), according to a statement.

The eCFA has been designed to work with existing mobile money platforms like MPesa, which have themselves been revolutionary for the millions of unbanked Africans. The e-currency will be produced with technology created by eCurrency Mint Limited, a company that enables central banks to create their own digital fiat currency, designed to be circulated alongside paper money as legal tender.

Just like paper money has a water mark, serial number and governor’s signature, these security features can be translated to a digital currency, explained Jonathan Dharmapalan, founder and CEO eCurrency Mint.

“By layering these together and binding them into a single instrument you have essentially created a central bank-issued digital currency,” Dharmapalan told a room at the Alliance for Financial Inclusion Global Policy Forum in the Mozambican capital Maputo in 2015.

The physical technology behind the currency is a digital currency production engine. In Dharmapalan’s presentation, the engine was a pyramidal structure with a tiny slot at the top. Each central bank will have their own engine, locked in a vault and kept offline. It will only be operational when the central bank wants to use it, he explained.

The advantages represented by the new technology have been tempered by a lack of clarity on how exactly the system will work. Skeptics say it’s unclear what kind of distributed ledger—the foundation of blockchain technology—the new currency will use, which could introduce a host of unforeseen regulatory and distribution issues for the West African regional bank.

Tunisia became the first African nation to use blockchain technology to digitize its currency, launching the eDinar earlier this year. Last year, Ecuador launched the first state-sponsored e-currency in the world.

Central banks around the world have kept an eye on the disruptive technology of cryptocurrencies. On the one hand, they’re excited about the distributed ledger innovation that allows the secure transfer of information, without a third party, according to a 2015 report released by the Bank for International Settlements (PDF), of which more than 60 central banks are members.

Digital currencies, however, are also difficult to regulate, and until now had no links to sovereign currencies. A digital currency issued by central banks allows national treasuries to make use of all the technological advantages of cryptocurrencies, without relinquishing control to decentralized organizations like Bitcoin.

With banks taking charge of issuing e-currency, they maintain their role as sole issue of national currency, disrupting the disruptor before independent blockchain currencies even gained a foothold in Africa.

Three sisters die from suspected exhaust fumes

Crime Scene Yellow TapeThree out of four sisters who slept in their mothers drinking spot ‘Golden City Kitchen’ at Akyempim in the Tarkwa Nsueam Municipality have been found dead.

Grace Nartey, 15, sister of the deceased who survived was, however, found unconscious and was taken to the Tarkwa Government Hospital where she is currently responding to treatment.

Chief Inspector George Sarkyi, station officer at Nsuata told the Ghana News Agency that on December 18, he received a call that three children had died in a drinking spot.

He said he and his officers rushed to the scene but was told that the deceased Abena Amos, 15, Arabi Dadzi, 13 and Akaba Dadzi, 7, have already been deposited at the Tarkwa Government Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy.

Inspector Sarkyi said all the deceased, Grace and their mother lived at Akyempim and during their leisure time they assisted their mother at the drinking bar.

The station officer said on December 17 there was power outage as a result of a heavy downpour during the day and because of that Madam Dadzi put a generator in the bar to enable the deceased and Grace have access to light as they slept.

Inspector Sarkyi said the mother woke up only to find out that all her children were unconscious.

He said Abena, Arabi and Akaba were sent to the Tarkwa Government Hospital, but they were pronounced dead on arrival.

Inspector Sarkyi suggested that the fumes that emanating from the generator might have made the deceased to suffocate to death.

He reminded the public on the need to desist from keeping their generators indoors when they are working.

Inspector Sarkyi said the case was still under investigation.

Russians looking for a handshake from Nana Akufo-Addo

Akufo Addo Tip Toe Lane

Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has praised Ghanaian authorities for efforts at conducting another successful presidential and parliamentary elections and hailed the electorate for showing maturity at the polls held on 7 December 2016.

In an official statement posted Tuesday, the Ministry noted that “observers from the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States have recognised the election results as credible, as no serious violations that could have affected the expression of the people’s will were reported.”

It concluded that “Moscow considers the national election in Ghana an important step by Ghana’s society on the path toward stable social and political development.”

The Electoral Commission has declared Nana Akufo-Addo as elected President whose New Patriotic Party (NPP) earned about 54 percent of votes, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) got 44 percent. The NPP is a liberal democratic party and is one of the dominant parties in the national politics of the Republic of Ghana.

In the 7 December 2008 presidential election, Akufo-Addo received more votes than John Atta-Mills amassing 4,159,439 votes representing 49.13% of the total votes cast, placing him first, but not enough for the 50 per cent plus one needed for an outright victory.

It was the best-ever performance for a first-time presidential candidate since the beginning of Ghana's 4th republic in 1992. In the run-off elections, however, Mills ultimately received 4,521,032 votes, representing 50.23%, thus beating Nana Akufo-Addo.

Russian authorities have known the NPP for about a decade and have interacted with leading party officials previously. John Kufuor, a leading NPP member and then President of the Republic of Ghana met with President Vladimir Putin at the 33rd Group of Eight (G8) summit held 6-8 June 2007 at Kempinski Grand Hotel in Moscow.

That was followed by an official working visit to Moscow by the then Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, on 12 July 2007 on the invitation by Russian Foreign Affairs Minister, Sergey Lavrov.

During their diplomatic discussion, both Ministers reached an understanding to raise trade and economic cooperation between the two countries. They further agreed on developing direct business contacts between Russia and Ghana.

Towards realising this goal, Nana Akufo-Addo and Lavrov agreed to facilitate direct contacts between the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of both countries. Akufo-Addo said that the Ghanaian side was preparing proposals concerning new projects which may become the object of joint development by companies in Ghana.

Currently, the United Russia Party, Federation Council (Upper House) and State Duma (Lower Chamber) told GNA in separate interviews in Moscow that they were ready to establish political and parliamentary relations with the new government and the New Patriotic Party.

Russia and Ghana have accumulated a valuable experience of mutual respect and trust from nearly 60 years of cooperation in their diplomatic relations that have been described as very friendly and close.

The relations here refers to the bilateral relationship between the two countries. Russia has an embassy in Accra and Ghana has an embassy in Moscow. Russia and Ghana will celebrate 60 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2017

We will support ‘1 village, 1 dam’ - Investors

Nana Osei Bonsu

The Private Enterprise Federation (PEF), a non-profit, non-political and autonomous institution, has declared its support for the implementation of the ‘One Village, One Dam Project’, contained in the 2016 Manifesto of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Federation said it would do its best within its capability to support the incoming Nana Addo-led administration to undertake the project, which its members have described as laudable and one that would help farmers in the country.

Delivering his speech at the post-AGM Private Sector Forum of the PEF in Accra yesterday, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PEF, Nana Osei-Bonsu, noted that agriculture is the key to Ghana’s industrialisation and that should appropriate measures be put in place, the economy could grow well with the Agric sector.

According to him, the PEF and its members were committed to partnering the incoming government to ensure that, at least, farmers in the country get enough water to enjoy all year round farming, as pertained in other parts of the world.

He continued that the PEF would lay a pipeline to supply water from Ada to the Northern Region to ensure that there was adequate water for farming, especially, in the dry season, saying the move would go a long way to help the ‘One Village, One Dam Policy’ of the NPP.

The CEO, however, urged Nana Addo to put measures in place to ensure that politicians did not compete with the private sector for contracts, adding that the enormous taxes that were negatively affecting the stability of the microeconomic enterprises to become competitive, be removed.

Nana Osei-Bonsu further beseeched the Akufo-Addo administration to review the performance of the economy, and its impact on the private sector, within a month following the end of each quarter.

Meanwhile, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President-elect, in his keynote address, reiterated the NPP’s strategies for the private sector. He indicated all his policies would be implemented in collaboration with the private sector.

Nana Addo added that the vision for the next four years of his government was to modernise agriculture, improve production efficiency, and achieve food security and profitability for farmers, with the aim of significantly increasing agricultural productivity.

“We have identified some key initiatives integral to our Industrial Development Strategy, which we intend to implement vigorously. I refer, in particular, to the One District One Factory initiative, and I want to emphasise that this policy will be implemented in collaboration with the private sector,” Nana Addo posited.

Nacee composed 'Onaapo' for me - Dee Aja

Dee Aja
Dee Aja(middle) has confirmed that 'Onaapo' was composed by Nacee
Musician, Dee Aja, has confirmed to rainbowradionline.com that the ‘Onaapo’ song was composed by Ghanaian male musician, Nacee.

There have been controversies as to who composed the song. Dee Aja had claimed in previous interviews with the media that he wrote the song.

But when rainbowradionline.com contacted him through a facebook chat, Dee Aja confirmed that Nacee wrote the song for him. This follows revelation on GH Entertainment by Nacee that he wrote the song for the artiste and that he [Dee Aja] is an ungrateful person.

Nacee had also expressed his disappointment on the artiste for claiming that he was not paid for his song, but when to comment, Dee Aja declined to comment.

When asked if Nacee composed the song he said, ‘’Yes is true. I have never taken that from him.’’

When asked if he was paid for his services, he said, ‘’that is between me and him…I am not going to comment on money issues with you.’’

Dee Aja also added that he informed Nacee when he traveled to Nigeria to perform the song and it will be untrue if Nacee should say that he was not aware about it.

‘’I told him when I was going to Nigeria and I informed him when I returned from Nigeria. I told him when they gave Onaapo the slogan of the year and told him I will bring it. Maybe I did not put all those right,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, he has promised to settle matters with Nacee.
